Jesus a Democrat?

"When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice:but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn." Proverbs 29:2

First, let me start off by stating I am a Christian. If this offends you, I make no apologies. I do not have a bumper sticker on my car that says: “WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?” I already know. I have this book at home called the Bible, which tells me what Jesus did and would do. I am a full time Christian, not a part-time Christian. I look at the difference being, a full time Christian views Christianity as an all or nothing proposition. You either embrace the teachings of Christ and the Words of the Bible one hundred percent, or not at all. Part-time Christians believe they can pick and choose which teachings they accept or reject.

I am a Christian, but also a voter. The paradox is resolved when I stay with my adherence to my beliefs and testament to my faith even into the voting booth. I look at the candidates and their stand on the issues of the day. I take their stand and political rhetoric and match it against what is taught in the Bible, the ultimate litmus test. I know in my heart, nothing will be 100%. So, like everyone else, I look for the closest match.

I knew it was only a matter of time. No matter how hard they fight it, the Democratic Party knows that President Bush was re-elected on the strength of Christian voters. We know they are desperate and want back in. So how long would it be before they try to present themselves as an acceptable alternative for Christian voters. All they have to do is to try to change our thinking on what are important issues to us. And voila!!!! Along comes former Democratic Congressman Martin Frost who wrote an article for FOXnews.com on Oct. 2, 2006, entitled “New Book Says Religious Right is Wrong About Christian Value" in which he makes the following statement: "Jesus would have been a Democrat had he been alive today. After all, he preached about helping the poor and the peaceful resolution of disputes. ...Jesus had little in common with the current day religious right with its preoccupation with abortion, gay rights and stem cell research."

To say I was a little amazed at that statement would be an exaggeration. Shoot, I was shell-shocked!!!! He talks about a book written by another liberal Democrat, Bob Edgar, entitled: “Middle Church – Reclaiming the Moral Values of the Faithful Majority from the Religious Right”. Reading Mr. Frost’s article, I came to the conclusion that he had anointed Mr. Edgar as the vision of what a true Christian should be.  True Christians should only be involved with feeding the poor, avoiding war, and protecting the environment. His covert idea is that once Christians subscribe to what he and Mr. Edgar believes are important, the only party that to support would be the Democratic Party. Interesting theory Mr. Frost. To bad you and your party just don’t get it!!! Here are my bullet arguments why Christ would not have been a Democrat:

  • He would have not supported any political party (John 18:36 "...My Kingdom is not of this world"...)
  • He would not have supported any persons or groups that advocated abortion or embryonic stem cell research(Matthew 18:6 "...But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged around his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea"...)
  • He would have never supported same sex marriage (Matthew 19: 4-6 "...Have ye not read that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female....For this cause shall a man leave Father and Mother and shall cleave to his wife:and they twain shall be one flesh?...)
  • He would have railed against the immorality that permeates every fabric of our society today (Matthew 19:8, Mark 10: 5-12, and Luke 16:18)

Sorry Mr. Frost, the evidence doesnt add up to Jesus being a Democrat, does it?

There is so more to being a Christian than just helping the poor, avoiding war, and saving the environment. Every major religion supports those themes whether it is the Torah or the Quran or even Eastern religions. Even atheists and secularists preach these same ideas. So what does the Democratic Party have to do to entice true Christians to their party?

If the Democratic Party wants to be the party of Christians, it must join in the condemnation of immoral practices it now supports. Therein lays their problem. It would have to condemn the sin of homosexuality, and embrace the Bible's teaching of marriage between man and woman, thus alienating their new found voting base, the gay community. They would have to forsake their position on abortion in the face of outrage of the feminists. It would have to condemn the vulgarity and promiscuity that is part of Hollywood and the entertainment industry as a whole and risk losing the huge campaign contributions they receive. The Democrats would have to insist that parents be notified when schools are passing out condoms and teaching sex education and same sex partnerships to children. Doing so would cost them the support of the NEA and teacher's unions.

In short, the Democrats would have to take the road less traveled; the difficult road, the one Christians take every day. The road not based on being safe and non-threatening, but the road outlined in the Bible.

Can we Christians forget the legacy of the Clinton years? Eight years of having to endure the most amoral person ever to occupy the White House. Yes, we bring up William Jefferson Clinton again. Bill Clinton, liar, adulterer, liar, sexual harasser, liar, philanderer, liar, (did I mention liar?) and if the reports are to be believed, rapist.

The man who many Democrats, including Mr. Frost, held to high esteem and honor unlike any president before him. They spent eight years humiliating, degrading, and insulting any and all Christians who opposed Clinton. They told us his adultery wasn’t a sin, it was his private life. They spun webs of deceit covering his crimes and misdemeanors. They willfully violated every teaching and every principle in the Bible to support this man. And they did it with a smile on their face.

Now they are desperate. They haven’t had control of Congress for 12 years and the White House for 6 years. It is said that absolute power corrupts absolutely, and they are dying to be corrupted again. For some inexplicable reason they believe they now must become the party of the Christian faith. But to do that they insist that we Christians must abandon all of our principles and let they the Democrats dictate to us what we believe. They want us to keep our beliefs generic and innocuous thereby being acceptable to their other secular supporters. Feed the hungry, support anti-war groups, and worry about the environment. Three ideas designed to offend no one. Talk about wanting your cake and eating it too!!!

So what are we left with? Can we safely say that the Democratic Party now wants to be the party of the group it has loathed for at least the last 20 years? Can we forget the late seventies and eighties when Democrats were oh so happy to call us conservative Christian kooks? Do they now need us to win? The answer would have to be a resounding yes, as long as they can get us to change our beliefs and priorities. This is unacceptable to us. So sorry Mr. Frost as true Christians we must obey all the Words of the Bible.

Remembering the shame of those times and listening to Mr. Frost and others of the Democratic Party now try to woo Christian voters into their camp, leaves me very skeptical of their motives. I can only conclude that they are trying whatever it takes to get votes.   When they are elected we'll be put on the shelf and forgotten. We'll be again saddled with part-time Christians making governmental decisions and we'll be told that it’s not a question of morality, but what's best for the public good.

Does give you thoughts to ponder............
